STEP 1: Applicant conditions
The list below outlines certain conditions necessary to join AVSAR. Please review this information carefully knowing that these are minimum requirements. We encourage AVSAR members to continually strive for proficiency as well as securing and maintaining related certifications. Do note that applicants may be subjected to a shakedown climb/hike, and/or other unlisted conditions. Please review this information carefully to ensure you’re ready to apply.
Three-season requirements
- At least 18 years of age.
- Have reliable transportation.
- Live year ’round within a one hour drive to the Presidential Range.
- Have the strength and stamina to hike all day carrying your gear, and more.
- Own hiking clothing, boots, and equipment appropriate for all weather and conditions.
- Be able to function as part of a team to litter-carry a patient over steep terrain.
- Be experienced hiking in the rugged White Mountain National Forest.
- Be familiar with trail names and trailhead locations.
- Be able to navigate using apps, map and compass, or GPS.
- Possess the skills and equipment necessary to survive overnight in the mountains.
- Be able to identify heat, cold, and other common hiking injuries.
