Rescuers had to carry an injured Connecticut hiker 4-1/2 miles to safety after he fell about 15 feet and injured an ankle while hiking the Killkenny Range of the White Mountain National Forest.
New Hampshire Fish and Game officials said Travis Newell, 27, of Durham, Conn., alerted 911 about his injury at 10 p.m. Sunday. Authorities decided it was best for him to stay overnight before beginning the rescue.
The rescue involved about 40 people, who hiked to Rogers Ledge. They began moving Newell shortly before 1 p.m. Monday and arrived at South Pond in Stark about 4:30 p.m.
Groveton Ambulance transported Newell to Weeks Hospital in Lancaster.
Assisting in the carry-out were Fish and Game conservation officers and rescue workers with Appalachian Mountain Club, Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue, and a Conway-based SOLO wilderness first responder class.
