AVSAR Winter Teams Application

STEP 1.1: WB applicant conditions

In ADDITION to the 3-season team’s conditions, WB team applicants must meet or exceed the minimum requirements below. We encourage AVSAR members to continually strive for proficiency as well as securing and maintaining related certifications. Do note that applicants may be subjected to a shakedown climb/hike, and/or other unlisted conditions. Please review this information carefully to ensure you’re ready to apply.

Winter below treeline requirements
  • Participate in at least THREE 3-season call-outs.
  • Current medical certification at the WFA-level plus CPR/AED.
  • Complete a one-day companion rescue-level avalanche course (repeated bi-annually).
  • Proficient use of crampons and ice axe, including self arrest.
  • Have the strength and stamina to hike all day carrying your winter gear and more.
  • Own hiking clothing, boots, and equipment appropriate for winter conditions below treeline.
  • Be able to function as part of a team to carry a patient in hazardous winter terrain.
  • Posses the skills and equipment necessary to survive in the mountains overnight in winter.

In ADDITION to the WB team’s conditions, above, WA team applicants must meet or exceed the minimum requirements below. We encourage AVSAR members to continually strive for proficiency as well as securing and maintaining related certifications. Do note that applicants may be subjected to a shakedown climb/hike, and/or other unlisted conditions. Please review this information carefully to ensure you’re ready to apply.

Winter above treeline requirements
  • Participate in at least SIX winter-below or 3-season call-outs.
  • Current medical certification at the WFR-level plus CPR/AED.
  • Complete a one-day companion rescue-level avalanche course (repeated bi-annually).
  • Proficient use of crampons and ice axe, including self arrest.
  • Own hiking clothing, boots, and equipment appropriate for winter conditions above treeline.
  • Be able to function as part of a team to carry a patient in hazardous alpine terrain in winter.
  • Possess the skills and equipment necessary to survive in the alpine overnight in winter.
